Chapter 2: Cluny Museum: The Birth of Civilization and the Birth of Paris

The musee DE Cluny provides for the visitor a window to a time in which the prevalence and survival of life were uncertain.The inhabitants of such time led a life in which time was highly inconsistent regarding the survival of the person and the daily treading provided little comfort for the assurance of a tomorrow. In such moments the church became a haven for the faith of the masses who sought to find refuge from the hardships of their daily life. The approach by the various clergy of the time towards the methods in which to pursuit the spiritual aspect of religion differed and in the order established by the Cluny the pursuit of god through beauty became a prominent drive for the realization of copious pieces of artwork that were centered around religion. The pieces of art varied from highly ornamental and intricate to simplistic. In the musee DE cluny  the pieces that are presented form parts of scenes of religious events as well as pieces that take inspiration on pagan beliefs such as unicorns and other mythological creatures. the museum contains various pieces carved in wood that delineate biblical passages such as the birth and death of Jesus as well as differing versions of saints and other patron characters from the bible. Also carved in stone were other important figures most of them religious as well but some presenting royalty and other figures that played important roles within the church. Finally presented in the form of six tapestries the story of the Lady and the unicorn also resides with the cluny museum. In the tapestries the dame is presented accompanied by a multitude of different exotic animals each tapestry representing one of five senses with the exception of one tapestry which is known to be possess the ability to entice various interpretations.
