Chapter 6: The Pantheon: The Enlightenment, the Rise of Science and the Individual

The church has a history of being an intolerable institution at times such is demonstrated through their bigotry in approaching the theory of Galileo that the earth was not the center of the universe. Those who stand in power in the church have been known to exercise their sovereign in order to benefit most those who have power in order to preserve or expand it. Just as this occurs within the church it has also been known to occur within governments and other autonomous institutions throughout the world. When the people decide that such abuses are no longer admissible the people may decide to turn to revolt and modify the government. My reaction to the criticism of the church is not that of astonishment the church and those who manage the church such as the clergy stand separate from the religion itself as well as a variety of beliefs that are presented due to the fact that the bible was rewritten by several individuals before it finally reached its current position. In contrast to the beliefs of that the church had forced for many years on the people the pantheon stands as a homage to those who contributed to the realization of enlightenment of mankind and the exploration of the abilities of man through research of science and the acquired process of thinking which aided in investigation. The movement of enlightenment engaged in the use of science to find new answers without the use of existing myths. Foucault’s pendulum scientifically demonstrates the earth rotates but it could symbolize the efforts through experimentation that allowed Foucault to design such device. Man no longer detained by the general norm of thought provided by society was free to theorize in different methods, by borrowing from the scientific community the way in which people thought was able to be mended and advances in various fields was possible.
