Chapter 10: Musée D’Orsay: From Train Station to Museum of Impressionism

In the light of a new epoch Impressionism might have come under the scrutiny of several salons as well as members of the public due to the new techniques it employed and due to the alteration of the techniques that artists had taken years to master. Portraiture and landscaping were not radical but the topics that impressionism concentrated on made them offensive. Their approach to mundane events and scenes of a society that was accustomed to being conservative in regards to the everyday events. The public found impressionism as an insult to their societal constitution which preferred to censor certain negative aspects of the quotidian. The paintings of those who are deemed as impressionists currently hold a high status within the collections of many and have gained a higher value since the main actors within the movement have passed. I believe that the progression of time has allowed the world to come to accept the paintings produced by this movement due to the events that have arisen in the past 100 years and allowed for the inclusion of more liberal ideologies. Events such as wars and other world catastrophes were able to engender artists who wished to deviate and to equally dictate a message for society regarding the beliefs that were spread by society as proper. Impressionist may stand as a truly creative movement as it involved the development of new techniques and the acquisition of inspiration from sources that had not been considered previously. Artists aimed to add to their paintings more than form and shape but also texture color and motion within the piece. What the artists did not resemble the like of any pieces of art that had been drawn. In the museum we were able to see paintings such as those from James Tissot who painted realistic scenes of women dressed elegantly.
